Astonishing Growth
The beginning . . .
By 2001, I had spent over twenty years in the construction industry. I had been the CFO of a multi-million dollar commercial construction company. Then I branched off to co-found and operate a residential roofing business. Six years into running this business, I started another business manufacturing and wholesaling handmade high end outdoor decor to patio and gift stores throughout the country. All of these businesses experienced growth and then plateaued.
I eventually left the roofing business to focus my attention full time on my new venture.
Then 9/11 occurred. The economy slowed. No one was spending money on expensive non-essentials so new orders for product stopped.
Always one to land on my feet, I was offered a position as CFO for a high end luxury home builder.
With the affects of 9/11 I didn't see people spending money for luxury custom homes but the owner of the company had a vision and I was on board.
The owner brought myself and the other managers into a meeting. Together we created a plan.
First, we looked for ways to cut expenses without cutting people. In the field we looked for ways to reduce waste in materials and processes. We renegotiated our lease and reduced our office space in half. We went through our expenses line by line to determine essentials and non-essentials. Non-essentials were cut.
Then we started creating. We didn't have any new business coming but we did have some we were finishing up. Our plan was to use the slow down to focus on reinventing our organization's culture.
We didn't set revenue and profit goals.
Instead we determined who we were and made a declaration of it. "We are the finest construction company" was our declaration and from that day forward, we measured all our decisions against the question of , "What would the finest do?" and expected the business to grow exponentially - which it did.
We held monthly meetings where we acknowledged each other (the purest form of creation), shared the current position of the company, discussed a principle of our culture that would be our focus until our next meeting and discussed the success, failures and observations regarding the previous month's principle.
As the months went by business increased without spending money on any marketing. Everyone wanted to know how we did it. Everyone - clients, vendors, suppliers and our own employees became our best marketing tools. They were astonished. It was an incredible growing experience culturally within the organization and personally for each individual.
As the business grew our clients became famous athletes, celebrities, business owners and other affluent people. I observed and learned from those I came in contact with what it means to enjoy fulfilling success. Those that were truly fulfilled practiced the same principles in varying forms that we were focusing on within the business and creating our success.
From here I developed the Astonishing Growth Program. I use the same principles that turned around our business not only in my own daily life but in my coaching and consulting business where I help individuals and organizations become their best selves. I have seen many people from the age of sixteen on up, have their lives and organizations transformed by applying these simple principles.
Through this, I have witnessed people do things they never thought they could . . .
